SJAM Felicitates Former Indian Sports Personalities with Lifetime Achievement Awards

Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai – a group comprising prolific and hardworking journalists of Mumbai, recently hosted an event to felicitate sportspersons for their outstanding contribution in their field of expertise. The event was hosted at the Garware Club House Banquet Hall in Mumbai on 13th of October, 2022. It was attended by prominent sporting personalities. Moreover, it was overwhelming to see so many journalists from different media houses gather at the event to honour former Indian athletes and administrators. The highlight of the event was none other than Mr Khalid Ansari – a legendary journalist, who founded Sportsweek Magazine and the Mid-day group. He was the Chief Guest of the evening. Mr Ansari was at his dapper best, belting out an impactful speech mixed with his trademark wit. A total of five sporting personalities were accorded Lifetime Achievement Awards for their outstanding contribution in the field of sports.

The Event was hosted at Garware Club House Banquet in Mumbai on 13th of October, 2022 where in the who’s of Sports Field attended the event. Moreover, it was overwhelming to see so many journalists from different media houses gathering at the event to Honor Former Indian Athletes and Administrators. The entire event was presented by Host Prasanna Sant – A Popular Sports Presenter.

The First Awardee was Ms. Diana Edulji – One of the Legendary Cricketers of Mumbai who played Test & ODI Cricket for India between 1976 to 1991. The Former India Captain has also been a part of Committee of Administrators in BCCI and she has donned various caps over the last few decades contributing towards the development of Women’s Cricket in India.

The Second Awardee was Ms. Sheila Kanungo – an Indian Sport Shooter. She won a silver medal in 2002 Commonwealth Games in Air Pistol Pairs

The Third Awardee was Mr Adille Surmariwala – Former Indian Athlete who represented India in 1980 Moscow Olympics. Adille Sumariwalla competed as a 100m runner in several international competitions and at the Olympics

The Fourth Awardee was Former Indian Hockey Player MM Somaiya – Maneyapanda Muthanna Somaya is a former Indian field hockey player and was employed with Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd. As a field hockey player, he was Captain of the Indian National Team and played as a halfback. He played in 3 Olympic Games in 1980, 1984 and 1988. 

The Fifth Awardee was Shri Ratnakar Shetty – a chemistry professor by profession who went on to become BCCI’s first Chief Administrative Officer after serving the Mumbai Cricket Association in various capacities.

The event ended with high tea amongst distinguished guests which included Veteran Journalists including the likes of Ayaz Memon, newly elected CCI President Ms. Madhumati Srivastav, the entire SJAM Committee and many more names.
